Men's Dress Shirts Make For Great Gifts

Men's dress shirts are a signature staple in any wardrobe. A classic button-up shirt can be worn casually layered over a tee shirt and left opened with the cuffs rolled. When buttoned up and with the collar popped slightly, the look is preppy and polished. When a men's dress shirt is worn under a classic V-neck or crew neck sweater, the look is sophisticated and classic. Although trends in men's dress shirts typically remain consistent from season to season, there are subtle changes, additions, and new patterns and color schemes to look forward to with each new season.

One of the most popular trends in men's shirts is the layering of foil-print graphics and tattoo-inspired graphics over a plain, striped, or checkered print. This is a great dimensional look that can be work dressy or casual. These edgy shirts look best when worn un-tucked and buttoned up. These shirts also look great worn open over a plain-colored tee with jeans or khakis.

Epaulettes, metallic buttons, military-inspired shoulder details, and grommets are some of the many touches designers are adding to men's dress shirts to add visual interest, depth, and style. Epaulettes are thick strips of fabric adorned by a button or tab closure; they are typically found at the shoulder or on the sleeve cuff. They create dimension and bring balance to an otherwise classic shirt silhouette. Some dress shirts are adorned in a subtle way with metallic buttons, while other shirts are covered in rich details, grommets, and even studs.

Stripes, plaid, and checkered dress shirts are often thought of as classic designs and prints. While this is true, designers and clothing manufacturers are always looking to add stylistic details to an already-classic piece. They do this by experimenting with the season's hottest colors and incorporating them into the design and pattern of the shirt. In fall and winter months, designers may accent a gray and black-checkered shirt with striations of teal or burgundy. In spring and summer, yellow stripes may be interspersed amongst light blue and spring green stripes adding splashes of color and personality to classic dress shirts.

Some of the more daring dress shirt trends include hounds tooth patterns, bold argyle prints, and even vibrant color-blocked patterns. Neon and bright colors have become more socially acceptable and trendy for men to wear. It is not uncommon to see men confidently wearing baby pink, bright purple, neon fuchsia, and other wild hues. When worn with a neutral pair of dark denim jeans, classic aviator sunglasses, and a pared-down oxford shoe or sandal, the look is incredibly modern and chic.

To extend the life of any shirt, it is important to always wash garments inside out in cold water. This will not only help to preserve the colors, but also protects grommets, buttons, studs, and other design details. Some men's dress shirts may require professional laundering or dry cleaning services. Silk, wool-blend, and rayon shirts can often bleed colors, shrink, become misshapen, and even come apart when washed in a washing machine. If the care tag reads, "dry clean only," it is important to adhere to the manufacturer's suggested wash and wear guidelines. Dry cleaners can starch, iron, and launder dress shirts for a nominal fee and keep them looking new and fresh for many years.

Dress shirts pair just as great with a professional suit as they do with a pair of ripped jeans.
